Canada’s Pet Resource — Built by Pet People, for Pet People
PetAdvisor.ca was founded on a simple frustration: most pet advice online is written for American audiences, references American products, and ignores the very real differences Canadian pet owners face every day.
Provincial licensing rules. Canadian veterinary shortages. Pet food brands that ship to Toronto but not Saskatoon. Pet insurance providers that operate differently in Quebec than in BC. These aren’t minor details — they shape the actual experience of owning a pet in this country.
We built PetAdvisor.ca to fill that gap.
What We Cover
Whether you share your home with a golden retriever, a senior tabby cat, a pair of budgies, or a Holland Lop rabbit, PetAdvisor.ca covers the full spectrum of Canadian pet ownership:
- New Pet Basics — first-time owner checklists, breeder and adoption guidance, what to expect in year one
- Breed Guides — health profiles, temperament breakdowns, and care tips for dogs, cats, and small animals
- Food & Nutrition — honest reviews of Canadian pet food brands, ingredient guides, and feeding advice by life stage
- Health & Wellness — preventive care, symptom guides, mental enrichment, and when to call your vet
- Health & Safety — emergency preparedness, toxic plant and food lists, seasonal hazards in Canadian climates
- Grooming — breed-specific grooming routines, product reviews, and coat care for Canadian winters
- Training & Behaviour — science-based training guidance, separation anxiety, multi-pet households
- Insurance & Financial — unbiased comparisons of Canadian pet insurance providers, budgeting guides, and financial planning for pet ownership
We don’t sell pet products. We don’t accept payment for reviews or rankings. Our only job is to give you honest, accurate, Canada-relevant information.
Our Editorial Standards
Every article published on PetAdvisor.ca is written to meet a high bar for accuracy and usefulness.
We cite our sources. Where we reference health claims, statistics, or veterinary guidance, we link to the original source — whether that’s the Canadian Animal Health Institute, a peer-reviewed study, or guidance from the Canadian Veterinary Medical Association.
We write for Canadian realities. We don’t recycle American content. When we discuss pet food, we check Canadian availability. When we discuss regulations, we reference the relevant provincial or federal body. When we talk about finding a vet, we acknowledge that Canada has a veterinary shortage affecting millions of pet owners.
We update our content. Pet care science evolves. Product formulations change. We review and update our articles regularly to make sure the information you’re reading is current.
We are not a substitute for your vet. PetAdvisor.ca provides general educational information, not veterinary medical advice. For any health concern specific to your animal, please consult a licensed veterinarian.
Meet the Team
Dr. Meredith, DVM
Veterinary Advisor & Health Content Lead
Dr. Meredith is a small animal veterinarian with over fourteen years of clinical experience, including eight years running a mixed-practice clinic in rural Ontario. She completed her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine at the Ontario Veterinary College and holds additional certification in feline medicine through the International Society of Feline Medicine.
After years of fielding the same questions from clients — and watching them struggle to find reliable Canadian-specific answers online — she joined PetAdvisor.ca to help bridge the gap between the exam room and the internet. Dr. Meredith oversees all health and wellness content on the site and reviews articles for medical accuracy before publication.
She shares her home in the Kawarthas with two rescue greyhounds named Archie and Betty.
James Rutherford
Pet Nutrition Writer & Food Review Lead
James has spent the better part of a decade deep in the world of pet nutrition — first as a buyer for an independent Canadian pet supply retailer, then as a nutrition consultant helping pet owners navigate the overwhelming landscape of commercial and raw diets. He holds a certificate in companion animal nutrition from the University of Guelph’s Open Learning program.
His work on PetAdvisor.ca focuses on food and nutrition content: ingredient analysis, brand comparisons, life-stage feeding guides, and the kind of label-reading education that helps owners make genuinely informed choices. He’s sceptical of marketing claims and believes strongly that the best diet for your pet is one that fits their biology, their health status, and your budget.
James lives in Calgary with his two border collies, who serve as enthusiastic (if biased) taste-testers.
Priya Nambiar
Training, Behaviour & New Pet Writer
Priya is a certified professional dog trainer (CPDT-KA) with a background in animal behaviour and a decade of hands-on experience working with dogs in shelter, rescue, and private training settings across Ontario and British Columbia. She completed her undergraduate studies in animal biology at the University of British Columbia and has completed advanced coursework in applied behaviour analysis.
She is a committed advocate for force-free, science-based training methods and writes PetAdvisor.ca’s training and behaviour content with a focus on practical, real-life application — not just theory. Her articles reflect the messy, wonderful reality of living with animals: reactive dogs, resource-guarding cats, multi-species households, and everything in between.
Priya is based in Vancouver and shares her apartment with a deaf dalmatian named Biscuit and two very confident guinea pigs.
Sophie Tremblay
Breed Research Writer & Small Animal Specialist
Sophie brings a lifelong love of animals and a background in science communication to PetAdvisor.ca. A former contributor to several Canadian wildlife and nature publications, she transitioned to companion animal writing after spending five years volunteering with exotic animal rescue organizations in Quebec. She has particular expertise in small mammals, birds, and the often-overlooked world of “pocket pets” — rabbits, chinchillas, guinea pigs, rats, and beyond.
Sophie leads PetAdvisor.ca’s breed guide content and is the voice behind our small animal and avian coverage, ensuring that owners of non-dog, non-cat pets have access to the same quality of information as everyone else. She believes strongly that every pet deserves an informed owner, regardless of species.
She lives in Montreal with her partner, two Holland Lops, and a very talkative African grey parrot named Baudelaire.
